About the Journal

Focus and Scope

STOA is the journal of the Institute of Philosophy at the Universidad Veracruzana, which aims to serve as a forum for dialogue and discussion among specialists and academics coming from philosophy or other fields of knowledge who bring their concerns to reflection on ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of culture, philosophy of history, philosophy of science, philosophy of law, philosophy of religion, analytic philosophy, history of ideas, philosophical anthropology, sociology, economics, and anything related to the actions of humans as thinking beings.

Likewise, STOA is a journal committed to Spanish, thus making a decisive bet on it as a language for philosophical dialogue, alongside Portuguese and English.

STOA is published semiannually in February and August, accepting contributions from around the world but with a special focus on Ibero-America. Its interests cover issues of philosophy in general, with a wide range of content and perspectives, but with rigor in their treatment.

Peer Review Process

When manuscripts are received, the editors will conduct an initial review to check adherence to editorial guidelines. If the manuscript complies with these guidelines, it will be accepted, and the author will be notified via email that the article is moving to peer review. The manuscript will undergo peer review by external academic reviewers, either national or international, in a double-blind format. An article will be accepted once two reviewers provide positive recommendations for publication. If one review is positive and the other negative, a third reviewer will be consulted to reach a majority decision. Reviewers have four weeks to complete their evaluation, though this period may be adjusted during the editorial process. Based on this evaluation, the article may be 1) accepted, 2) rejected, or 3) recommended for resubmission after specific revisions are made. In that case, the author will have the opportunity to correct the article and resubmit it for a new review. Once a positive recommendation from the reviewers is received, the article will be scheduled for publication, and editorial production will begin with the style review.

PUBLICATION FREQUENCY

Stoa publishes two volumes per year, semiannually, in February and August.

Ethical Code and Anti-Plagiarism Policy

Stoa is committed to compliance with and respect for ethical conduct standards at all stages of the publication process. Our journal refers to the Code of Conduct and Best Practices defined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for scientific journal editors, as well as the Principles of Transparency and Best Practices for Academic Publications published in June 2015 (second version) by COPE, together with DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), OASPA (Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association), and WAME (World Association of Medical Editors).

Authors must ensure that the data and results presented in the work are original and have not been copied, fabricated, distorted, or manipulated. Plagiarism in all its forms, multiple or redundant publication, as well as the fabrication or manipulation of data, constitute serious breaches of ethics and are considered scientific fraud. Authors should refrain from submitting manuscripts to Stoa that are already under consideration by another publisher, nor should they submit the manuscript sent to Stoa to another publisher until they receive notification of its rejection or voluntarily withdraw it. However, it is permissible to publish a paper that expands on another already published as a brief note, communication, or abstract in conference proceedings, provided that the text on which it is based is properly cited and the modifications represent a substantial change to what was previously published.

The Editorial Board of the University of Veracruz has a plagiarism detection tool that offers services to mitigate the risk of academic plagiarism. Stoa, upon receiving each article, submits it to a plagiarism review using this tool. Any text that shows evidence of plagiarism or self-plagiarism will be rejected.
