Eros, agape and the social transformation of love in Flora Tristan: From Biography to Moral theory

Abstract

Flora Tristan (1803–1844) is undoubtedly a prominent figure in 19th-century philosophy. Recognition of this philosopher is due both to her remarkable biography and her thinking, as she was a pioneer of feminism and socialism. This inquiry aims to offer an interpretive shift regarding Flora Tristan's concept of love. This shift consists of introducing the distinction between charitable love (agape) and erotic love (eros): understanding these forms of love as complementary and essential parts of her social project. The philosopher's moral theory is based on love, equality and human dignity. It also promotes an appreciation of the role of women in reforming society.
